Privacy and Information Practices
The Office of Legal Affairs, both at the campus and at the Office of General Counsel, advises the campus on the interpretation of state and federal privacy laws such as HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), CMIA (the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act), CCPA (the California Consumer Privacy Act) and relevant statutory data breach notification requirements, as well as advising on: compliant contractual provisions in these areas; the release and access to protected information; and the drafting and interpretation of relevant University policies and implementing procedures. The office also advises on compliance with the California Information Practices Act and the California Public Records Act as well as the University Electronic Communications Policy.
